Swiggy’s chief technology officer, Dale Vaz, has resigned from his position with effect from May 2023. Vaz, who joined Swiggy from Amazon in June 2018, will be replaced by Madhusudan Rao, the company’s senior vice-president of consumertech and fintech. Vaz is said to be moving on to launch his own entrepreneurial venture. Meanwhile, Karthik Gurumurthy, head of Swiggy’s quick-commerce vertical, Instamart, has also said he will step aside from his role by the end of this month to take a sabbatical. Gurumurthy is expected to head a new business in the broader ecommerce space at Swiggy after his sabbatical.
According to a research note by HSBC, Zomato has started reclaiming market share that it had lost to Swiggy in the second half of 2022, after the relaunch of its loyalty program, Zomato Gold. This comes at a time when Swiggy is facing new challenges, including competition from Zomato and slower growth in its core food delivery business. Dale Vaz joined Swiggy in June 2018 as the Head of Engineering and Data Sciences, and was promoted to the CTO post in 2020 after the exit of co-founder Rahul Jaimini. Prior to Swiggy, Vaz had worked at Amazon for over a decade, where he held several leadership positions in the e-commerce giant’s technology and product organizations. Karthik Gurumurthy, who was heading Swiggy’s quick-commerce vertical Instamart, announced that he would be stepping aside from his role by the end of March 2023 to take a sabbatical. This announcement came just a few days before the news of changes in Swiggy’s leadership team.
