In a significant development for Indian hockey, ace drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh is set to lead the national men’s team in the upcoming FIH Pro League matches. The announcement, made by Hockey India, also revealed midfielder Hardik Singh as the deputy captain. The 24-member squad, carefully selected for the double-leg fixtures in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, aims to fine-tune the team’s preparations for the highly anticipated Paris Olympics later this year.

The FIH Pro League action kicks off in Bhubaneswar on February 10, running through February 16, followed by the Rourkela leg from February 19 to February 25. During this period, India will face stiff competition, playing against Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Australia twice each.

Harmanpreet Singh, renowned for his prowess in drag-flicking, brings both experience and skill to the captaincy role. With midfielder Hardik Singh as his deputy, the team showcases a balanced leadership structure, blending the dynamism of youth with the seasoned expertise of the captain.

The squad announcement followed expectations, with a notable omission of striker Boby Dhami and goalkeeper Pawan from the 26-member Indian team that recently toured South Africa. The goalkeeping responsibilities will rest on the shoulders of the experienced PR Sreejesh and Krishan Bahadur Pathak.
