In a devastating turn of events, the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh witnessed yet another loss in its ongoing efforts to reintroduce cheetahs to India. On Tuesday afternoon, the 16th of January, 2024, Namibian cheetah Shaurya succumbed to unknown causes, marking the tenth death since the species’ reintroduction in 2022.
The news was confirmed through an official statement by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Director of the Lion Project. According to the statement, the tracking team observed concerning signs in Shaurya around 11 AM, including incoordination and a staggering gait. In response to these distressing symptoms, the team tranquilized the cheetah, only to discover signs of weakness upon examination.
The cause of Shaurya’s death remains unknown, pending the results of the post-mortem. This unfortunate incident adds to the toll of seven adult cheetahs and three cubs that have already perished in the national park. The deaths have been attributed to various infections, raising serious concerns about the well-being and survival of the reintroduced cheetah population.
About Kuno National Park:
The Kuno National Park’s ambitious project to reintroduce cheetahs to India commenced in 2022, aiming to revive the dwindling population of these majestic creatures in the country. However, the persistent challenges and the repeated loss of cheetahs raise questions about the effectiveness of the conservation efforts and the overall health of the ecosystem.
Conservationists and wildlife authorities are now facing the daunting task of unraveling the mystery behind the recurring deaths. Understanding the causes is crucial not only for the well-being of the remaining cheetahs but also for the long-term success of the reintroduction program.
The incident underscores the delicate balance required in managing reintroduction projects, where not only the physical health of the animals but also the ecological dynamics must be carefully considered. As investigations unfold, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the situation, hoping to implement corrective measures and safeguard the future of these incredible creatures in India.
