The Toronto Blue Jays have made the decision to designate right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass for assignment. This move comes in the wake of controversy surrounding Bass after he shared a social media post calling for anti-LGBTQIA+ boycotts of Target and Bud Light. The post referred to the sale of LGBTQIA+ merchandise as “evil” and “demonic.”
The timing of the designation is significant as it coincides with the Blue Jays’ fourth annual Pride Weekend celebration, where LGBTQIA+ activist leZlie Lee Kam was scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch. In place of Bass, pitcher Kevin Gausman, who is set to start Sunday’s game, will now take on the role of the ceremonial catcher.
Bass, 35, issued an apology for sharing the anti-LGBTQIA+ post a day after posting it, but he has faced boos from fans during his recent home appearances in Toronto. In a statement, Bass expressed that he is working to educate himself but does not believe the shared post was hateful, although he recognizes how others may view it as such.
Toronto general manager Ross Atkins stated that both the controversy and Bass’ performance on the field factored into the decision to designate him for assignment. While performance was a significant aspect, the distraction caused by the controversy also played a role in the team’s decision.
The Blue Jays now have seven days to trade or waive Bass, who holds a 4.95 ERA in 22 relief appearances this season. Bass has previously played for several teams, including the Padres, Astros, Rangers, Cubs, Mariners, and Marlins.
Atkins mentioned that the team will not hinder Bass from joining another organization and that placing him in Toronto’s minor league system is not a realistic option. In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays have reinstated right-hander Mitch White from the 60-day injured list to replace Bass on the roster.
